8 Great Ways to turn Downtime into Uptime

Sometimes we find ourselves not having much to do because the work has slowed down, it’s the life of a freelancer. In those instances, I have eight suggestions to make your downtime into uptime. 

1. Networking / Linkedin
One way to make use of your downtime is on Linkedin. Networking is always good in any industry so spend some time on the site and network.

But more importantly, there’s ‘Linkedin Answers’ that allows you to share your expertise on any given subject. I believe this is a good way to share what you know and give back. Answering questions in an informative format allows you to get rated as best answer in your industry which is an added form of exposure.

Inspiration Block: Michael Bierut

He’s a senior critic at the Yale School of Art, has served as president of the AIGA, and was the winner of the AIGA’s medal in 2006. A founder and editor of DesignObserver.com, he’s the author of thecollection “79 Short Essays on Design.” - How Design Magazine

What is White Space

White space is always an active element in any good design; it’s also referred to negative space. White space is always occurring in a design from the moment you open up a blank document, the design has begun with white space. There are two types of white space, the undefined white space, which is what you get when you open a new document, and active white space, which occurs when an object is place in undefined white space.

Just to clarify a misconception, white space doesn’t mean it has to be white because it can be any colour whether it is black, brown or white. It’s also up to the designer to make it an important element of design because if not used properly it can be misunderstood for wasted space.
